HISTORY & BACKGROUND OF THEVALAKKARA VAIDYANS

In the 17th Century, the Deshinangad King’s Rule time, surrounded by 18 Madoms of Namboodiris and Potties, who were resided in this place for performing puja and those people known as Devapalakar, and later called the place as “Devapalakakkara”.
Those days, only Brahmins and Hindus were residents of this place and there was noChristians orMuslims as per history. At that time, they constructed a Devi (Godess) Temple by Tharunallur Namboodiri and joined with Thazhamangam Madom.
As per history, in Malayalam calendar year 904, the Thirvithamcode King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma extended his Kingdom of Venad and named as Thiruvithamcore, and Deshinangad’s Thevalakkara also became part of Thiruvithamcore.  The Madoms were reduced to minimum numbers and the Devapalakakkara (Thevalakkara).   One Keshavan Namboodiri of Thazhamangalm  married to Devaki Antharjanam from Tharunalloor Mana. They had three children, two sons Krishnan and Damodaran and one daughter Yashodara.
Keshavan Namboodiri’s elder son Krishnan married to Lakshmibhai Antharjanam of Kothamangalam and stayed in Thevalakkara’s  Thazhamangalam Madom.  Once travelling to Kothamangalam by boat and on way they stopped in Kottayam for purchasing some items from market and heard a speech of Christians there and interested in that enquired about the speech and the speakers presented him a speech written in skin of animal.
Returned in Thazhamangathu Madom, Krishnan Namboodiri was very much interested in those speeches and started to read it. Knowing to this, his younger brother Damodaran Namboodiri was got angry and annoyed for bringing the speeches written in animal skin to home.  So Krishnan Namboodiri decided not to read the speeches in Thazhamangalathu Madom and started reading it in Akappurathu Madom.
Even though his brother was angry and annoyed, elder brother has decided to read and believe in Christianity and got baptism.  They changed their name as Thomman and Mariam.
On seeing elder brother’s affection to Christianity, the younger brother sold all his properties in Thevalakkara  and left Thazhamangam Madom proceeded to Peruvelikara in Kallada and constructed a house named as Thazhamangalam Madom and resided there.  After Damodaran Namboodiri’s death his son sold all the properties to Edesseri Nair and proceeded to Kottarakkara and constructed a house named Thazhamangalam Madom.  After becoming Christianity, Thomman-Mariam couples had one child and named him as Thomman Thomman.
In the beginning of 18th Century, the scholar in Sanskrit vidwan and famous Ayurveda Maharshi of Virada came Thevalakkara and visited Thomman-Mariam’s house in Akapuram Madom and asked for some drinks for his thirst.  Surprised by this, Antharjanam gave him cow milk.  When returned from outside, the Namboodiri saw the Sanyasi and had some talks.  The Sanyasi said his interest in staying there.  But the Namboodiri told him that he is now a Christian.  They constructed an Ashramam for staying the Sanyasi.  The famous Ayurveda Vaidyan transferred all his medicine making vidya to Thomman-Thomman and later went to his eternity at Thevalakkara.
During these days the King of Travanocore,  Anizham Thirunal’s mother was sick due to some ailment in her eyes.  So many vaidyans treated her but they could not succeed to cure it.  In these days the King came to know about ThommanThomman’s treatment from his servant Kaippilly Pillai.  He sent some of his servants to Akapuram Madom in Thevalakkara with King’s order.  Thomman-Thomman immediately proceeded to King’s palace and treated the eyes of Amma Thampurati.  After getting over from her sleep Amma saw Thomman-Thomman was standing there and she asked “Vaidyan” to sit down.  He stayed there upto her eyes were completely cured.
Amma Thampuratti called him as “Vaidyan” and the vaidyan name started encrypted with his name.  At this time the servants of King came to Thevalakkara with King’s order to reconstruct the Mappila Veedu.  They constructed a new house and Akapuram Madom was called as Mappila Veedu. The King ordered to transfer 160 acres of land east of the Road and 160 acres of land west of the Road and 140 acres of wet land in Thevalakkara and 160 acres of wet land in Vettikad to Thomman-Thomman of Akapuram Madom without any land fees.
Thomman Thomman married the only daughter Kunjandamma of the richest Tharayil Tharakan.  All the wealth of Tharayil also got to Thomman.  They had three sons namely Kochu Thomman, Kunjakanda, Koshy suffixing with their name as “Vaidyan”.  All the Vaidyan families are spread from these in Thevalakkara.
Kunju Kurien Vaidyan of Mappila veedu had 3 sons and five daughters.  The eleder son Kochu Koshy Vaidyan constructed a house and lived in Kulathinmel.  He married the sister of Palakunnathu Mathews-II Metropolitain of Maramon.  He had six sons and two daughters.  The sons are Oommommen Vaidyan, Joseph Vaidyan, Koshy Vaidyan, Mathai Vaidyan, Thomas Vaidyan, Abraham Vaidyan and daughters are Sosamma and Kunjamma.  Vaidya Ratnam Koshy Vaidyan had one son and two daughters namely Thomas Koshy Vaidyan, Deenamma and Susamma.  The present Kulathinmel house is headed by Thomas Koshy Vaidyan and his sons are Koshy T Vaidyan, Mathew T Vaidyan and daughter Jasmine Rachel Thomas.
